Vence: a touch of history

Vence has always been an attractive village thanks to its location. It is surrounded by three rivers, fed by two natural springs, one of the reasons it feels like a true haven.

The village is enclosed by ramparts built under the orders of Francis I. At the time, it was a stronghold standing in opposition to Nice. Perched at 325 meters above sea level, Vence enjoys a strategic vantage point over the surrounding landscape and the sea.

The historic town within the ramparts is well worth a visit: its houses, façades, narrow streets, and architecture will transport you to another era.

Try to spot the ash tree growing in one of Vence’s squares. It is said to have been planted in 1538 and gifted by Francis I.

Vence and the arts

The unique setting and atmosphere of Vence have attracted artists from around the world, including Marc Chagall and Matisse, who built the renowned Chapelle du Rosaire here.

If you appreciate painting or sculpture, the many galleries and artists’ studios throughout the village will be a source of inspiration. A wide variety of styles coexist, contemporary art, abstract painting, goldsmithing, santons, mosaics, wood sculpture… Feel free to step inside the studios and meet the artists.

A must-see: visit Saint-Paul de Vence and the Maeght Foundation

Arrange for a private chauffeur to take you to Saint-Paul de Vence and discover the Fondation Marguerite et Aimé Maeght. It houses the most important collection of modern art in Europe, nothing less. It was the first foundation in France dedicated to art.

The art-dealer couple formed close friendships with many artists who frequented the region: Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Fernand Léger, Georges Braque, Alberto Giacometti, among others.

The foundation building itself is worth the visit, designed by Catalan architect Josep Lluís Sert. More than 200,000 visitors come each year.
